The diaries of the Apostolic Nuncio Ermengildo Pellegrinetti (1876-1943) are in the Vatican Apostolic Archives. They describe his life from 1916 to his death in 1943. A part of the diary covering the period from 1916 to 1922 was already published by the Vatican Archives almost 30 years ago (1994) and concerns his diplomatic service in Bavaria and Poland. The edition had the full title I diari del Cardinale Ermengildo Pellegrineti 1916-1922, Terzo Natalini; Vatican City: Archivio Vaticano, 1994. Collectanea Archivi Vaticani 35, pp. 332. The central part of the diary refers to his diplomatic service in Yugoslavia (1922-1937), and the final part is based on his work in the Roman Curia as a cardinal, a service he performed after leaving Yugoslavia in 1937 until his death in 1943. The diaries of Cardinal Pellegrinetti are extremely important archival material for the period of Croatian and Yugoslav history between the two world wars, particularly for certain aspects of it, such as the ecclesiastical, diplomatic, and political history of the interwar period. This archival material provides an abundance of knowledge about this period and sheds a new light on interwar Croatia and Yugoslavia, because it brings the view of a very objective and impartial observer from such an important position as the Apostolic Nuncio, and who, on the other hand, did not participate in the political and national struggles of the peoples of the former Yugoslavia at that time, nor did he originate from the same area.
